The Facebook app for the Palm Pre is here. It is an official app, but it remains a little barebones for now, but updates are in the works and should roll out steadily. The app features the live main feed, but seems to ignore any filters you might have applied – so you’ll still receive updates from feeds you’ve categorically excluded. Everything else works very well, and fits nicely into the WebOS interface. You can view and share photographs and updates, and like or unlike status updates from your friends.

Links open in new Browser card views, and YouTube videos will automatically launch the corresponding WebOS app. You can manually refresh the feeds. Thankfully the app is pretty light on battery usage, hopefully additional updates will still maintain this excellent feature. Right now, you can follow your friends’ updates, send out your own, and share photos. Joining and creating groups, chat, and other features are yet to be seen. It’s a functional and well-designed start.

Card View & Multitasking

The Pre has a single button on the front — the ‘Center button.’ Hitting this button takes you into ‘Card View,’ which allows you to swipe left and right between your open cards and then tap on one to enter it. It’s very quick and works rather well.

You can also hold your finger down on a card and then drag it left or right to reposition it next to another card, i.e. placing an email draft next to the web page you’re researching.

Finally, within Card View you can simply swipe up on any card to get rid of it — to essentially close the app. There are no save or close dialog boxes in webOS. Everything is saved automatically.

What I’m working towards saying here is that webOS has the single most intuitive multitasking setup I’ve ever used on a smartphone (and I’ve used nearly all of them). It’s not enough for a smartphone to simply multitask (although it’s enough for it to beat the iPhone in that department), a smartphone today needs to multitask in a way that’s easy to understand to all users.

With Card View, webOS has in one fell swoop made multitasking intuitive and understandable to any user after only a couple of minutes of use. You can tell immediately what apps you have open, choose which apps to close, and navigate between apps quickly and easily. If you have to many cards open, the Pre simply pops up an alert letting you know you need to close some before you continue.

Palm Pre arrives in the UK

The Palm Pre. It’s not just a phone, it’s a myth, an idea, possibly a legacy… and a really, really long time coming. It’s almost impossible to believe, but the crew at Engadget has been talking about a Linux-based Palm phone since way back in 2004. Through the now-distant years that followed, we were speculating, pontificating, and wishfully-thinking about a new device from a company that we’d come to expect innovation from. But we waited. And waited. And waited. We waited so long, in fact, that we actually penned a lengthy open letter to Palm, pleading for the company to get back on its game. Only when the picture looked really, truly bleak for the folks in Sunnyvale (you know, like $2 a share bleak) did we actually see a spark of hope — two sparks, in fact — called the Pre and webOS.

Yes, this is epic stuff. The Pre (and its accompanying operating system) could likely decide the fate of the company largely credited with ushering in the age of the do-everything phone. Since Palm’s announcement at CES this year, news surrounding the Pre has been a veritable whirlwind of activity: rumors, half-truths, hate, love, fear-mongering, fanboyism, rampant gadget-lust… and even a little late night celebrity for the pint-sized phone. Finally the time has come to put rubber to road and get into the guts of this thing once and for all. Can the Pre and webOS live up to the hype — the kind of hype we haven’t seen since the launch of the original iPhone — or do they snap under the pressure?

The Best Palm Pre Apps

The Palm Pre was recently released along with some extremely enticing palm preapps. One of the most useful applications for the Palm Pre is the stopwatch\timer. This application allows you to have a virtual stop watch on your phone or to have a timer that you can use when cooking.

Another great Palm Pre application is OpenTable and is by far one of the most popular applications. OpenTable is a Palm Pre app that allows users to read reviews of restaurants in their area. It also allows users to make reservations at one of the thousands of restaurants throughout the country. This is an extremely convenient application for the Palm Pre because it eliminates the need for needing to call a restaurant to make a reservation.

Connect 4 : Palm Pre Apps

Although his Palm Pre application has not caught on like the Speed Brain application - this is one to look out for. I know you remember playing Connect 4 back when it was in it’s hey day and it’s still just as fun. Offering multiple game modes such as single player, multiplayer (either on a single device or online), you’ll definitely not have too many boring moments with this application on your Pre.

Playing the computer is definitely a challenge - it’ll sneak up and beat you out of nowhere. Unfortunately you won’t be able to tell who’s the best on the game because they do not rank you higher or lower. Wouldn’t it be cool if after winning all your games you found yourself as Connect 4 champion in Pre world? Highly unlikely though because of stalemates…Chess ftw

Seeing reviews and rating of local businesses and restaurants has become a staple in applications. It’s a great application and has a better user interface than most of the apps previously reviewed here that servce the same purpose. It’s social networking feature is great and stronger than most of the other apps and you can also recommend restaurants and businesses to your friends without leaving the application.

This Pre Application integrates seamlessly with its corresponding website. The coolest feature to me is that when you’re at your favorite local eatery - just by hitting the I’m here button from within the application people will be able to see where you are. That’s a great feature and can definitely aid you when it comes to meeting up with friends at those hard to find restaurants.

Missing Sync and Pocket Mirror For Palm Pre

Looking to sync your Mac with your palm pre? Missing Sync will help you with that. Looking to sync your Windows pc with your Palm Pre? PocketMirror is the application for you. Both apps do virtually the exact same thing - enable you to sync your contacts and calender easily between your Computer and your Palm Pre.

Don’t worry about wires as everything will sync over Wifi. Missing Sync has this cool feature that syncs by proximity - so if your close to your pc your Pre will automatically Sync. PocketMirror is a bit basic since it only syncs with outlook. Although you don’t need an Exchange server - you will need MS Outlook on your pc. Missing Sync on th eother hand allows you to your video, music files, bookmarks, and more and even formats the files for you. They’re both free for now but don’t expect that to last for long!

Speed Brain

Does it match? Pretty much that’s the only thing you have to know about the Speed Brain application. It’s a very simple game which gives you a series of images twice - and then you have to choose whether the images matches, or if they didn’t. This is great for working on your cognitive skills and your reaction time. It’s also an extraordinarily simple and fun game.

It does have rankings which I like being the competitive person I am. It is the only game within the application - and you can also check your score vs other players. It’s a free app so I don’t see why anyone won’t try it out. It’s great if your just bummin’ it or trying to waste time.

Similar to the “Where” application - this application helps you recognize businesses, cafes, restaurants, and stores by your location on your Palm Pre. Since it’s source is the Citysearch database you will find most businesses listed on this application. Owner descriptions and user reviews are available within the application as are their corresponding addresses, phone numbers, and hours of operation.

The user interface seems to be a little better than the “Where” application but where has a little more categories as you’ll notice. When it comes to food this application doesn’t rank with the Goodfood application which I highly rate. You can search from within all screens and also there are user reviews available within this application. Overall this is a great Palm Pre application and I’m sure we’ll see some more of it’s type in the next coming months.
